PETERSFIELD TOWN 0 - 3 NEWPORT (IOW)
The Rams were left to rue an early penalty miss as Newport IOW came away with a 0-3 win after a strong Petersfield performance at Love Lane last Saturday.
Despite the home side missing key players Matty Rowland and jordan Geddes, the hosts started the match well - moving the ball quickly leading to a couple of opportunities for both sides.
The best chance came in the sixth minute when the Rams were awarded a penalty, won by Gari Judd as Newports Darren Powell brought him down. However, Judd could not capitalize as Gary Streeter made a strong save to the bottom left to keep the scoreline 0-0.
Streeter was again called into action minutes later, after a dazzling run into the area with the goalkeeper making himself big and deflecting the point blank range shot wide.
The Rams kept plugging away with multiple shots on goal, however, Streeter comfortably saved all the efforts.
Petersfield quashed every attempt by Newport IOW until their first goal. A long range shot by Ned Lamb in the 31st minute seemed to roll into the bottom corner past Nick Hall, who should have done better.
Newport were under threat from the start of the second half with a free kick in a dangerous area. Richard Way struck the ball nicely under the wall but the visiting keeper was there again to palm the ball away and keep his clean sheet intact.
The pressure continued, with the Rams making a dangerous run into the box. As the the opportunity arose the trigger was never pulled and the chance quickly disappeared.
Marvin Orepo came on for the home side with a great performance. Unfortunately, it didn't stop Newport putting the game to bed in the 70th minute with a fantastic example of a counter attack. The move started with a long ball up to Jared Cousins who slotted the ball between the defence giving it to Conner Kelly, who had a fantastic game. He then dispatched the ball calmly into the bottom right corner.
The final blow was dealt in the 78th minute with Kelly’s second and Newport IOW’s third. Wetherick held the ball up in the middle of the park from three Rams players to put Kelly through on goal again beating Nick Hall from the same angle.
The manager, Mark Summerhill will easily find positives from an unlucky scoreline but the result leaves a deflated Rams in fifteenth with 31 points.
