Great defensive tenacity earns Rams a cup victory.
BROKENHURST 1 - 2 PETERSFIELD TOWN
The Rams pulled off one of the shocks of the round showing great defensive shape and character in a narrow victory last Tuesday.
Brockenhurst winger Will Tickle was at the heart of the Badgers pressure. His tricky feet and burst of pace made life hard for the defence. Tickle’s run earnt his side the first corner after a great Rams block.
Brockenhurst carried on their pressure with a penalty shout moments later. Referee, Callum Walter waved away the shouts after appeals for a shove.
Rams keeper Matt Petts was called into action midway through the half. A cross into the six yard box left a free header for the striker however, Petts produced a spectacular reaction save and pushed the ball round the post.
With Petersfield soaking up the pressure well, they scored the first goal near the half hour mark. Against the run of play, a corner floated in from the right by WIll Essai, Cameron Smith jumped highest and headered into the top corner.
The home side had a chance to level soon after from the spot. The referee pointed to the spot as a Brockenhurst player went over. Jude Nwachukwu converted the harsh spot kick dispatching it into the bottom left corner.
The visitors came out determined to not concede however Cassius Newton ran at the Rams fainting players and flashed a shot across the goal with a striker narrowly missing the ball at the back post.
With the Rams struggling to settle, Bullard had a shot which was spectacularly blocked by Ryan Kennedy.
The rams were gifted a lead 72 minutes in. Michael Wright received the ball on the wing cut inside and let fly a decent shot fortunately for Wright the ball squirmed through the keepers gloves and as he tried to recover he only pushed it further into the net.
The final twenty minutes saw more home pressure and could have equalized. A shot came in from a long way out but Kennedy got in front. deflecting the ball to loop over the defence and hit the underside of the crossbar, bouncing on the line before being cleaned of the line. The linesman decided it did not cross the line as the Rams held out for the victory.
